Rare Antique Lehmann "Balky Mule" Wind-Up Tinplate Toy – Made in Germany (c. 1910s)
Up for sale is an authentic antique German tinplate clockwork toy manufactured by the famous Ernst Paul Lehmann (EPL) company, model EPL 425 "Balky Mule" (also known as the Stubborn Donkey).
This classic early 20th-century mechanical toy features a painted clown sitting in a two-wheeled cart drawn by a felt-covered mule/donkey. When wound, the action causes the mule to gallop and balk while the clown pulls back on the reins.
Key Markings & Details:
Rear panel features original lithography displaying the official Lehmann bell trademark (MARKE EPL), ENGL. PATENT, D.R. PATENT, MADE IN GERMANY, and BILD GESCH.
Original lithographed wheels featuring tumbling clown artwork.
Integrated underside wind-up mechanism with key intact.
Condition Details:
Overall: Very good antique condition considering its 100+ year age.
Figure & Fabric: Clown retains original fabric top and red trousers with age-related fading/dusting. Painted metal head shows light wear.
Mule: Grey felt body covering is intact with light surface wear; thread tail remains present.
Tinplate & Finish: Excellent lithography on wheels and back plate. Base and undercarriage show typical surface spotting, patina, and light aging.
Mechanism: Clockwork spring and internal gears are complete and visible inside the housing (sold as-is in original unrestored state).
