Getting started, registration & verification
What Gettit is, who can use it, and how to set up and verify your account.
What is Gettit?
Gettit is an online marketplace for Australia that lets people buy and sell second-hand items, either by local handover in person or by shipping within Australia.
Gettit is a venue that connects buyers and sellers – it is not the seller and is not a party to the sale. It doesn't own, store, inspect or authenticate the items listed. The contract for any item is formed directly between the buyer and the seller.
For shipped orders, Gettit adds two things: a held-payment flow and Gettit Protection (our purchase guarantee). For local handovers, Gettit provides only the means to discover and contact each other.
Is Gettit an Australian alternative to eBay and Facebook Marketplace?
Yes, Gettit is an Australian alternative to eBay and Facebook Marketplace for buying and selling second-hand items.
- Free to list. Listing an item costs nothing.
- Sellers pay no fee when an item sells. The seller receives the full item price.
- Free local pickup. Local handovers have no Gettit fees and no commission.
- Tracked Australia Post shipping. Shipped orders get a prepaid, tracked Australia Post label.
- Held payments. On a shipped order, the buyer's payment is held until the item is delivered and confirmed.
- Verified members. Every member verifies their email address and mobile number before they can buy, sell or message.
Is Gettit safe for buying and selling?
Gettit is designed so buyers never have to send money to a stranger before they have the item.
- Every member is verified. Members must verify their email address and mobile number before they can buy, sell or send messages.
- Shipped orders: your payment is held. When you pay through Gettit, your payment is held securely. It is released to the seller only after the item is delivered and you confirm it, or when the confirmation window (48 hours after Australia Post's delivered scan) ends without an issue being raised.
- Gettit Protection covers shipped orders that don't arrive or are materially not as described.
- Secured Pickup lets you pay through Gettit for a local pickup and release the money with a code once you're happy with the item.
- Keep payments on Gettit. A free local handover is paid directly between members and is not covered by Gettit Protection. Never pay by bank transfer or PayID before you have seen the item.
Who can use Gettit?
Gettit is for people in Australia, and prices are in Australian dollars (AUD).
- You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract under Australian law.
- One person, one account (unless we agree otherwise in writing).
- You're responsible for everything done under your account, so keep your password secure.
How do I create an account?
- Download the Gettit app or open the website.
- Sign up with your name, email, phone number and a password.
- Add a profile – display name, photo and a short bio.
- Accept the Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Community Guidelines.
You can browse straight away. To buy or sell, you'll need to verify your email and phone (see below).
Why do I have to verify my email and phone?
Both email and phone verification are required to buy or sell on Gettit. It's a quick, one-time step that keeps the marketplace trustworthy and cuts down on fraud and fake accounts.
- You can browse and look around without verifying.
- To make an offer, buy, or list an item, your email and phone must be verified.
- Verifying your identity for payouts is a separate step handled by Stripe – see Payments & payouts.
Does it cost anything to join?
Creating an account and browsing is free.
- Local sales are free, forever – no fees, no Gettit cut.
- Shipped sales carry ONE buyer protection fee, which funds Gettit Protection and covers the card-processing cost. It's shown to the buyer before they pay.
Gettit doesn't sell advertising and doesn't sell your personal data.
Buying
How a purchase works end to end – both shipped and local.
How does buying a shipped item work, step by step?
When you buy a shipped item, your payment is protected:
- You pay through Gettit. Your money is held securely – it does not go straight to the seller.
- The seller ships your item with a prepaid Australia Post label, often via a parcel locker so the handover is contactless.
- You confirm. When it arrives, check it matches the listing and tap Confirm. If you don't raise an issue within the confirmation window, the order completes automatically.
- The seller gets paid only after that step.
If the item never arrives, or turns up significantly not as described, you can open a dispute while your money is still held – see Gettit Protection & disputes.
Always pay through Gettit. Paying off-platform – bank transfer, gift card, crypto – removes your protection and is the most common scam.
How does buying a local (in-person) item work?
For a local handover, you arrange to meet the seller in person and exchange the item directly.
- Free local handovers have no fees – there's no protection fee and no Gettit cut.
- Gettit Protection does not apply to local handovers – you transact at your own risk, so inspect the item before you pay and follow our safety tips.
- Payment for a local handover is arranged directly between you and the seller.
- Some sellers offer Secured Pickup: you pay through Gettit, the payment is held, and you release it with a code at the handover. See How does Secured Pickup work?
See Local handovers & safety for how to meet safely.
Can I make an offer instead of paying the full price?
Yes.
- Buy now at the listed price, or Make offer to suggest a price.
- The seller can accept, decline, or counter your offer.
- For shipped orders, the price you see before you pay includes the Gettit Protection fee, plus the shipping option you choose (home delivery, or a cheaper parcel locker).
What will I actually pay?
Everything is shown in Australian dollars before you commit.
- Shipped order: item price + the Gettit Protection fee + your chosen shipping option. There's no separate card-processing fee – that cost comes out of the protection fee, not out of your pocket.
- Local handover: just the price you agree with the seller – no Gettit fee.
The buyer pays for shipping on shipped orders. Every fee is itemised before you pay – there are no surprises at checkout.
When and why do I need to confirm receipt?
On a shipped order, your payment stays held until you confirm.
- When the item arrives, check it against the listing and tap Confirm.
- If you don't confirm and don't raise an issue within the confirmation window, the order completes automatically and the seller is paid.
- If something is wrong, raise a dispute before the window closes – while your money is still held.
Selling
Listing an item, dispatching it, and getting paid.
How do I list an item for sale?
- Tap the Sell button in the centre of the bottom bar (or Sell on the website).
- Add your own photos of the actual item – good light, a few angles, and close-ups of any wear.
- Write a clear title and description. Be honest about condition and mention any faults.
- Choose a category and set your price.
- Pick how you'll sell: local handover, shipped, or both.
- Publish.
Accurate, honest listings sell faster and avoid disputes. Stock photos and misleading descriptions can get a listing removed.
What am I agreeing to when I list something?
When you list an item you confirm that:
- you own it or are authorised to sell it, and it's free of any lien or third-party claim;
- the listing – photos, title, description, condition and price – is accurate and not misleading;
- the item is lawful to sell and is not a prohibited item; and
- you'll dispatch promptly with the prepaid Australia Post label (shipped), or show up for the handover you agree to (local).
You set your own prices and are responsible for your own tax (including GST where it applies). You – not Gettit – are the supplier of the goods.
How do I send a sold item?
When you sell a shipped item:
- Gettit generates a prepaid Australia Post label – you don't pay for postage out of pocket (the buyer covers shipping).
- Pack the item well and attach the label.
- Take it to any Australia Post Office or parcel locker. For orders going to a home address, a street posting box also works if the parcel fits. Lockers make the handover contactless and give you a drop-off record.
- Tracking updates automatically so the buyer can follow the parcel.
You'll need to print the label. If you don't have a printer, we can email the label to you so you can print it elsewhere.
Dispatch promptly – the sooner it's delivered and confirmed, the sooner you're paid.
Can I add an invoice, manual or service history?
Yes. Sellers can attach documents – such as an invoice, manual or service records – to a listing to give buyers more confidence. Honest, well-documented listings build trust and sell faster.
Payments & payouts
How payment is held, how sellers get paid, and how Stripe verification works.
What happens to my payment after I pay?
On a shipped order, the buyer pays through our payment provider and the money is held securely – it is not released to the seller yet.
The held payment is released to the seller when:
- the buyer confirms the item is as described, or
- the confirmation window passes with no dispute.
If the item never arrives or is significantly not as described, the buyer can ask for a refund while the payment is still held.
How and when does a seller get paid?
For a shipped sale:
- The buyer pays and the funds are held by Gettit.
- You ship with the prepaid Australia Post label.
- After delivery, the buyer confirms – or the confirmation window passes – and the held funds are released to you.
- Your payout lands in your connected account.
We can't promise an exact payout time beyond confirmation (or the window closing) → release. For a local handover, payment is arranged directly between you and the buyer.
How do payouts work – what is Stripe Connect?
Payouts run through Stripe Connect. Each seller gets a connected account with Stripe, and that's where your money is paid out.
- Card and bank details are collected and stored by Stripe, not by Gettit.
- Setting up your connected account includes a quick identity check (KYC) – see below.
Why do I need to verify my identity to get paid?
To receive payouts as a seller, you verify your identity once through Stripe.
- Stripe handles the identity check and tells Gettit only whether it passed. Gettit never stores your ID documents.
- This protects everyone from fraud, and no payout is made to an unverified seller.
- You'll be prompted to complete it when you're ready to be paid; it usually takes a couple of minutes.
You can browse, buy, message and list without verifying – identity verification is only needed to get paid.
What are the seller fees on Gettit?
There are no seller fees on Gettit when an item sells. Listing an item is free, and the seller receives the full item price.
Buyers pay a buyer protection fee on shipped orders (7.5% of the item price plus $1.50) and on Secured Pickups (3.5% of the item price). Free local handovers have no fees at all. Optional extras, such as boosting a listing, are priced before you buy them. See the Fees Schedule (gettit.com.au/legal/fees).
What fees does Gettit charge?
Gettit does not charge seller fees, but applies a buyer protection fee to shipped orders and Secured Pickups.
- Listing: free. It costs nothing to list an item.
- Selling: no fee. Sellers pay no fee when an item sells and receive the full item price.
- Free local handovers: no fees, no commission, ever.
- Shipped orders: the buyer pays a buyer protection fee of 7.5% of the item price plus $1.50, and postage. Both are shown before payment.
- Secured Pickup: the buyer pays a buyer protection fee of 3.5% of the item price.
- No separate card-processing fee. Payment processing costs come out of the buyer protection fee.
- Optional extras (like boosting a listing) are priced at the point of purchase.
All amounts are in Australian dollars. Full details are in the Fees Schedule (gettit.com.au/legal/fees). Gettit never sells ads and never sells your data.
Shipping
Australia Post satchels, weight limits, your own box, and who pays.
Who ships the item, and who pays for postage?
Shipping is carried out by Australia Post, an independent carrier.
- The seller gets a prepaid Australia Post label from Gettit and drops the parcel at a parcel locker or post office.
- The buyer pays for shipping – the cost is shown before you pay, as part of the shipping option you choose.
- Australia Post is independent of Gettit. Gettit is not the carrier and isn't responsible for carrier delays, lost or damaged parcels. On a protected order, your remedy for a lost-in-transit parcel is Gettit Protection, not a claim against Gettit as a carrier.
What parcel and satchel sizes can I use?
Gettit uses standard Australia Post satchels and parcels. When you list a shipped item, pick the option that fits:
- Small satchel – light, flat items (a paperback, a phone case, jewellery).
- Medium satchel – clothing, shoes, small electronics.
- Large satchel – bulkier soft items, like a folded jacket or a few garments.
- Your own box – for anything that doesn't fit a satchel, pack it in your own sturdy box and choose the parcel option that matches its size and weight.
If you pick a satchel, use a real Australia Post satchel. You can buy them at any post office. It matters for two reasons:
- It's one flat price for anything up to 5 kg, no matter how heavy or how far it travels. Australia Post doesn't weigh or measure a genuine satchel.
- Your own bag isn't a satchel. Australia Post prices it on its size and weight instead, so a 500 g jumper in a 5 cm-thick mailer costs around $4 more to send than the same jumper in a real Medium satchel – and the price the buyer was quoted assumed the satchel.
Pick the smallest option your item safely fits – it keeps the buyer's shipping cost down.
Are there weight limits? What is cubic weight?
Yes – Australia Post sets a maximum weight for each satchel and parcel size, so choose a size your item's weight fits within.
Cubic (volumetric) weight matters for large but light parcels. Australia Post may charge based on the greater of the item's actual weight and its cubic weight, worked out from the parcel's dimensions. In short: a big, light box can be priced as if it were heavier.
To keep shipping cheap and accurate: pack snugly in the smallest suitable box, and enter the right size and weight when you list.
Can I use my own box?
Yes. If your item doesn't fit a satchel, pack it in your own sturdy box and choose the parcel option that matches its size and weight. Make sure the box is strong enough to protect the item in transit and that the prepaid label is attached securely.
Can the buyer track the parcel?
Yes. Once the seller drops the parcel off, tracking updates automatically so the buyer can follow it. Tracking is provided by Australia Post; Gettit doesn't control carrier tracking accuracy or availability.
Gettit Protection & disputes
What our purchase guarantee covers, what it doesn’t, and how refunds work.
What is Gettit Protection?
Gettit Protection is Gettit's own purchase guarantee for shipped orders paid through the Platform. If a shipped item doesn't arrive, or is not as described, you get your money back, subject to the terms.
It works because your payment is held until you confirm: the seller is only paid once the order is confirmed (or the window passes), so your money is protected while the parcel is in transit.
Gettit Protection is Gettit's own guarantee – it is NOT insurance, it's not a policy you buy, and it's not a third-party stakeholding arrangement.
What does Gettit Protection cover?
For a shipped order paid through Gettit, the guarantee covers:
- Non-arrival – your paid-for item never turns up; and
- Not as described – the item is materially different from the listing.
The guarantee is capped at the amount you paid for the order.
What is NOT covered by Gettit Protection?
Gettit Protection does not cover (without limitation):
- Change of mind or buyer's remorse;
- Minor variations consistent with a used item and its stated condition;
- damage or loss after you've confirmed receipt;
- items collected or paid for off-platform;
- any local / in-person handover – local sales are at your own risk;
- prohibited items; and
- loss caused by your own (or the other party's) breach of the Terms.
If you want the purchase guarantee, buy and pay through Gettit for shipping – that's the whole point of transacting on-platform.
How do disputes and refunds work?
If something goes wrong with a shipped order:
- Open a dispute in the app while your payment is still held.
- We run a staged, evidence-based process and review evidence from both sides against our published resolution approach.
- We decide whether to release the payment to the seller, refund the buyer, or reach a partial outcome.
Throughout, the payment stays held. Our decision on releasing the held payment is final for the purposes of the Platform. None of this limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Are local (in-person) sales protected?
Free local handovers on Gettit are not protected. They are private transactions between the buyer and seller, paid directly and off Gettit's payment flow, so you meet and transact entirely at your own risk.
Secured Pickup is different: your payment is held by Gettit until you give the seller your code at the handover. Gettit Protection's cover for items that don't arrive or are materially not as described applies to shipped orders, not to Secured Pickup. Clause 8A of the Terms of Service explains how Secured Pickup works.
Local handovers & safety
How to meet safely for in-person sales – and why they’re at your own risk.
How does Secured Pickup work?
Secured Pickup lets you buy locally and pay through Gettit instead of handing over cash. It is an option the seller chooses to offer on a listing.
- You pay through Gettit when you buy, including a buyer protection fee of 3.5% of the item price. Your payment is held.
- You meet the seller and inspect the item.
- If you're happy, you give the seller the 6-digit code shown in your Gettit app. The seller enters it, and your payment is released to them.
Only give the code once you have the item and are happy with it.
Until the seller enters your code, either of you can cancel the order in the app, and the buyer is refunded in full. If a meeting time has been agreed and nobody cancels, the payment is released to the seller automatically 48 hours after that meeting time, so cancel or raise a dispute in the app before then if something has gone wrong. Gettit Protection does not apply to Secured Pickup. The full terms are in clause 8A of the Terms of Service.
Why are local handovers "at your own risk"?
A free local handover happens in person, off Gettit's payment flow, so the held-payment protection can't apply. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Gettit is not a party to and accepts no responsibility for a local handover – including the item's condition, safety, legality or value, whether payment is made, no-shows, theft, fraud, loss, damage or injury.
If you want protection, buy and pay through Gettit for shipping instead.
How do I stay safe meeting in person?
- Meet in a public, well-lit place – a café, shopping centre, or a Police station car park.
- Bring a friend, and tell someone where you're going and when.
- Inspect before you pay, and pay in a way you're comfortable with.
- Prefer parcel lockers for shipped items – contactless and tracked.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, walk away.
Will buyers see my exact address or location?
No. Your precise location never leaves our servers in a form that identifies where you are. Other members only ever see a blurred area (a generalised centroid) – never your exact address or pin. Gettit uses the precise value internally only for distance, "near you" sorting and fraud checks. You always choose where to actually meet.
Ratings & profiles
Two-sided ratings, profiles, and building a trustworthy reputation.
How do ratings work?
Gettit uses two-sided ratings: after a transaction, buyers and sellers rate each other. Leave honest, fair reviews based on real transactions.
Your ratings are part of your reputation and are kept for the life of your account, so a track record of good trades helps you buy and sell faster.
What's shown on my profile?
Your profile shows your display name, photo and bio, plus your ratings and reviews from past trades.
It does not show your exact address – only a blurred area for your listings. You can edit your profile any time from the You tab.
Trust & safety
Prohibited items, blocking, reporting, and how we moderate.
What can't I sell on Gettit?
Prohibited and illegal items are not allowed, including (without limitation):
- weapons, ammunition and regulated knives;
- illicit drugs, drug paraphernalia, and tobacco/vaping products;
- alcohol where prohibited;
- prescription medicines and medical devices;
- live animals;
- stolen, counterfeit or recalled goods;
- adult or sexual services;
- hazardous materials; and
- anything that infringes intellectual property or breaches Australian law.
Listing a prohibited item can get it removed and your account suspended or closed. If you're unsure, ask first at help@gettit.com.au.
How do I report or block someone?
Every listing and every member has a Report and a Block option.
- Report a scam, prohibited item, abuse, or anything that breaks our rules – reports are confidential.
- Block someone to stop them contacting you.
We moderate listings and chat, screen for fraud and off-platform-payment attempts, and act on reports.
Why must I keep payments on Gettit?
Never pay or accept payment off-platform for a shipped order. If someone asks you to pay by bank transfer, gift card, crypto, or "just message me directly", it's almost always a scam – and it removes your Gettit Protection.
The protected payment flow only works when the money runs through Gettit. We screen chat for off-platform-payment attempts. Report anyone who asks you to go off-platform.
What happens if someone breaks the rules?
Depending on severity, Gettit may warn you, remove a listing, hold or reverse a payout, restrict features, or suspend or close an account. Serious or illegal conduct may be reported to the authorities. We aim to be fair and proportionate, and we may consider context.
Account & privacy
Managing your account, your data rights, and how we handle your information.
How do I manage my account and notifications?
- Edit your profile – display name, photo and bio – from the You tab.
- Notifications: manage what you hear from us in settings. You can opt out of product updates while still receiving important service messages.
- Gettit communicates with you by email, SMS and push notifications.
Can I access, correct or delete my data?
Yes. Under the Australian Privacy Principles you can access the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct anything that's wrong.
- You can update much of your profile in the app.
- For anything else – or to request a copy of your data – contact help@gettit.com.au.
- You can close your account any time from settings. Some records may be kept where the law requires (for example, transaction and tax history).
Your privacy is governed by our Privacy Policy, aligned with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What does Gettit do with my personal information?
Gettit collects only what it needs to run a safe marketplace and move money securely. We use your information to run your account, operate the marketplace, process protected payments, prevent fraud, handle disputes and provide support.
- We do not sell your personal information and we do not sell advertising.
- Card details are held by Stripe, not by Gettit.
- Identity documents for KYC are handled by Stripe – Gettit keeps only the outcome (verified / not), never the documents themselves.
- Your precise location is never exposed to other members – only a blurred area.
How do I get help or contact support?
For anything we haven't covered here, contact help@gettit.com.au or visit the Help Centre at gettit.com.au/faq.
For money or dispute issues, raise a dispute in the app and our team will review it.
