Description

There are lenses that feel technical…and then there are lenses that feel observational—as if they quietly change how you notice people, distance, and light.

This Hanimar Auto “S” 135mm f/2.8 belongs to that second kind.

A vintage telephoto prime from the late 1960s–early 1970s era, often rebadged for global distribution, it carries the character of early Japanese optical engineering—simple, mechanical, and honest in its purpose.

Designed originally for Praktica-style systems and using the widely adaptable M42 screw mount, it can be paired with a range of modern digital and film cameras through inexpensive adapters.

And in use, it offers something that modern clinical lenses often forget:compression, softness, and a calm way of rendering distance.

This 135mm focal length naturally suits portrait work, candid street capture, and subject isolation—where backgrounds gently fall away and attention settles where you choose it.Not perfect by modern standards. But often, that is exactly why it feels alive.

There is something about using a lens like this that tends to slow things down in a useful way.

You begin to notice framing differently. Waiting differently. Seeing people and distance with a little more intention. And sometimes, that small shift in attention becomes the real change—not the image itself, but the way you arrive at it.
